Flood Protection and Coastal Restoration

2005 Lower Atchafalaya Basin Reevaluation Study study is to develop comprehensive plan for flood control and environmental protection public meetings, plan approval, authorized by congress, plan completed, undergo review every 5 years  Flood Control Act of 1928 and its modifications, Senate report to the 1994 Energy and Water Development Appropriations Bill U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Reevaluate the features of the 1982 report. This will ensure that the project functions properly and adequately during storm surge.  The current water protection features are oriented with Atchafalaya flooding, but focus needs to be to coastal flooding.  Related Projects: "Atchafalaya River Channel" and "Shoreline Protection/Restoration"
2005 Atchafalaya Basin Floodway System (ABFS) - Myette Point Boat Launch  evaluation of possible boat landing at Myette Point design agreement and project cooperation agreement signed.  Supplemental Appropriations Act of 1985, Public Law 99-88; Energy and Water Appropriations Act for FY 2001, Public Law 106-377 U.S. Army Corps of Engineers N/A
In process Atchafalaya River Backwater Study  to provide, among other things, flood protection for areas east of Morgan City development of a Project Management Plan Letter titled "Flood Control Below Morgan City, Louisiana" approved by the President for the Mississippi River Commission U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Highlight protection needs for areas that remain vulnerable to coastal storm surge.  Related Projects: "Atchafalaya River Channel" and "Shoreline Protection/ Restoration"
In process Bayou Teche produce a Milestone Report outlining problems and possible solutions site visit, discussions with residents Section 103 of the 1962 River and Harbors Act U.S. Army Corps of Engineers This will help pinpoint the problem that the Bayou Teche is posing to the Chitimacha property. These problems consist of erosion along the banks, flooding over the bank, and sinking along the upperbanks.  Related Projects: "Atchafalaya River Channel" and "Shoreline Protection/ Restoration"
2005 ABFS Interpretive Center  interpret region surrounding and including ABFS and the Corps' role in shaping the area Develop decision document, Plans and specifications will be initiated and project bid for construction WRDA 1986 U.S. Army Corps of Engineers An interpretive center will make the public aware of their natural surroundings including the Atchafalaya Floodway Basin System and also contributes to economic development by attracting visitors.  Related Projects: "Atchafalaya River Channel" and "Shoreline Protection/Restoration"
In process Atchafalaya River, Bayous Chene, Boeuf, and Black address feasibility of modifiying existing Federal project to deepen access channels Requested a study to address the feasibility of deepening the channels. Section 430of the Water Resources Development Act of 2000, Public Law 106-541 U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Deeper channels will allow goods to to be imported and exported and also provide access for larger vessels to the safe harbor of Morgan City. In addition, companies choosing to leave more exposed ports will have the opportunity to remain in Louisiana.  Related Projects: "Atchafalaya River Channel", "Shoreline Protection/Restoration" and "Bayou Choupique Channel Bredging", "East St. Mary Flood Control Structures- Bayou Chene"
2005 ABFS - Lake End Linear Parkway  development of recreational facilities that would provide public access to ABFS Engineering Documentation Report completed and awaiting approval by the Mississippi Valley Division. upon approval and receipt of local sharing funds, the project will proceed to the plans and specigications phase. Supplemental Appropriations Act of 1985, Public Law 99-88; Water Resources Development Act of 1986, Public law 99-662 in accordance with the Chief of Engineers report for the ABFS, LA U.S. Army Corps of Engineers N/A
1999 Atchafalaya Basin State Master Plan Plan seeks to better manage the Atchafalaya Basin Research effects of river over time. Transportation and Infrastructure

Ongoing I-49 South Corridor Complete I-49 from Lafayette to New Orleans Process as prescribed by federal requirements. NHS High Priority Corridor #37 LADOTD There could be opportunities to bring this project along more quickly as part of long-term recovery. Related Projects: "Expedite the Implementation of I-49"
2003 Chitimacha Stormwater Planning - Phase II Improving streets, drainage, and pedestrian walkways on the Chitimacha Reservation None clearly identified WRDA 1974 U.S. Army Corps of Engineers LTCR could provide means for more expedited implementation of this drainage improvement. Related Projects: "Update the Hazard Mitigation Plan"

Economic and Workforce Development

2001 Atchafalaya Trace National Heritage Plan Plan was commissioned to save important cultural and natural resources, enhance tourism, and create a sustainable economy Support from the grassroots level as well as business , civic, and state leaders. State of Louisiana State of Louisiana LTCR could highlight aspects of this plan for the purposes of economic development linked with issues of the Atchafalaya Basin.
