Cameron Parish - Community Involvement

Executive Summary

The Long-Term Community Recovery (LTCR) team meets regularly with a steering committee, a planning committee, and has organized technical working groups (comprised of citizens, local leaders and stakeholders) around issue areas.  The team conducts regular meetings, including public input meetings, with citizens and stakeholder groups.

The Police Jury was responsible for selecting and securing a site for the storefront in Grand Lake. The parish used it for various stakeholder and working group meetings for the Long-Term Community Recovery process.

Local Committee / Task Force

The Steering Committee includes consultants, the Cameron Parish administrator, and representatives from IMCAL, Southwest Partnership for Economic Development, and the Louisiana State University Ag Center. The committee has been in place since November and meets every Tuesday morning. 

The 26 members of the Planning Committee include citizens, police jury members, teachers, land owners, corporations, industry representatives, commercial fishing, business owners and local schools. The committee has been meeting every other week since November 2005. The Planning Committee established technical working groups with interested citizens and local leaders who have an interest, knowledge, and experience with area. 

Input Events

Cameron Parish public input events included:

  • Scoping Meeting (November 2005)
  • Town Hall 1 Meetings (December 2005) approximately 110 people attended two meetings facilitated by Louisiana State University Ag Center.
  • Louisiana Recovery Planning Day (January 2006) 38 participants attended this meeting.
  • Town Hall 2 Meetings (March 2006)

Day-to-day interaction with local decision-makers, general public

LTCR team members have attended all police jury meetings and several school board meetings, and have had daily interaction with citizens and working group members through email, phone calls or storefront visits. As needs were determined and projects were identified, meetings have been scheduled with various stakeholders including various business owners trying to rebuild and other stakeholders (e.g., small-scale fish harvesters in Hackberry).

Local leadership of implementation

Local champions have been chosen to lead each project. Various offices and agencies have been identified as points of contact for implementation.
