Transportation and Infrastructure

Transportation systems were severely impacted by hurricanes Katrina and Rita.  Roads were washed away, port facilities were damaged, and airports were disrupted.  Restoration of transportation facilities is a vital step in the recovery effort, and ultimately is necessary for the recovery of all other sectors.

Wastewater and water systems were disrupted as well, and some of these facilities have yet to be repaired.  Electrical power is still down in sections of southern Louisiana.  The repair of infrastructure facilities serves as both a catalyst and a prerequisite to large scale rebuilding.

This sector was written with specific input from the Louisiana Recovery Authority and U.S. Department of Transportation.  The sector includes:

  • A disaster impact assessment of infrastructure and transportation facilities
  • Priorities for the repair of facilities
  • An extensive list of agencies working on transportation and infrastructure recovery issues
