Human Services
In a time of disaster, the need for human and social services increases. People require support of all kinds including food, monetary assistance, and services for children, the elderly, and those with special needs. After Hurricanes Katrina and Rita the need for human services increased, while at the same time the normal human service providers were disrupted by the storms. Ensuring adequate human services to all Louisiana residents remains a recovery priority; as people return to their communities in southern Louisiana, Human Services facilities must be repaired or rebuilt to adequately meet people’s needs.
This sector was written with specific input from the Louisiana Recovery Authority and FEMA’s Long-Term Community Recovery Division. Included in this sector:
- An overview of methods to improve the delivery of human services
- An analysis of the impact of the hurricanes on existing human services programs
- A comprehensive list of agencies working on human services recovery issues
