Plaquemines Parish-Local Recovery Vision

The people of Plaquemines Parish pulled together to respond to the damage sustained from Hurricanes Katrina and Rita--neighbor helping neighbor. We learned many valuable lessons through this disaster, the most important being that we are a resilient people who want to rebuild and fully return to our normal lives with opportunities to improve our quality of life. We want to be safer, stronger and better than before. The people of Plaquemines Parish have been given a unique opportunity to recover and rebuild our lives and our towns in a way that makes us stronger and able to withstand future storms, affords better life opportunities, and adds to the beauty, culture and unique environments we want to protect.

The people of Plaquemines Parish want a community that—

  • Provides a high quality of life in a beautiful, safe, and economically vibrant community
  • Possesses a top-notch education system
  • Includes participation of and benefits for all residents
  • Provides safe and secure housing options for all residents
  • Excels in the provision of public services for all our residents
  • Provides unsurpassed recreational opportunities that benefit from the abundance of natural resources within the parish
  • Resists future damage from storms through reasonable levels of protection
  • Preserves and embraces the diversity of its cultural influences
  • Protects its historical landmarks such as Forts Jackson and St. Philip
  • Develops a clear, comprehensive plan to expand existing businesses and attract new businesses to the area through public and private sector partnerships
