Environmental Management
Disasters create environmental challenges and opportunities. Debris must be removed not only efficiently but safely so that impacts to ecosystems and public health are minimized. Essential public health facilities need to be brought back on line quickly. Hazardous materials need to be identified and cleaned up. With the exception of flood protection and coastal restoration issues, which are included as their own sector, the Environmental Management Sector facilitates viewing and recovery management of environmental issues, initiatives and priorities for the southern Louisiana parishes affected by Hurricanes Rita and Katrina.
This sector was developed with specific input from the Louisiana Recovery Authority, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The sector includes:
- Debris removal strategies, including removal strategies for abandoned cars and boats.
- Smart growth building and development principles
- Links to pre-existing environmental management plans
